Love in Action

-As printed in the magazine Sharing Ideas Fall 2006 issue

The degree of conflict in today's world is nearly incomprehensible. The whole world seems to be suffering from an unstoppable wave -- a literal tsunami of anger, brutality, war, and injustice, followed by escalating, self-perpetuating acts of revenge. Something is drastically, tragically wrong - it is hatred. What is happening in the world today affects us all -- whether we be soldiers, civilians, perpetrators, prey, terrorists or their targets - every person is touched by this eruption of world-wide violence. Each of us has become a victim of hatred. From earliest times, hatred has existed; it threatens the entire planet. There is no place completely safe, blessed with tranquility. It is not impossible for our world to become a peaceful planet, but it won't come from trying to control terrorists or governments of other countries. Control is not the solution.

I have a practical solution, one that is already in motion. In life there are certain principles that work in all circumstances. There are loving, constructive solutions to challenges and conflicts at every level of human behavior. If we always incorporate three principles into all our actions, we cannot help but act from a place of love.
These peace-creating principles are at the core of every world religion. They are Acceptance, Fairness, and doing your best. Applying these principles benefits all and will lead us to a hatred-free world.
Love brings fairness and justice to our lives. Love shows respect for oneself and others. Love offers inspiration to individuals to accomplish more, to want to change, to better existing norms and eliminate shortcomings. It enhances understanding and brings about new notions. It offers courage, awareness, passion, care, dedication, sacrifice, wisdom, forgiveness, hope for the future, and mutual understanding beyond cultural and geographical boundaries.
Over the past several years, I have extensively researched the problem of attaining peace. In searching for a clear answer to this question, I studied various resources and interviewed leaders in all types of endeavors, including religion, politics, and professional fields, as well as persons suffering from serious life problems. The conclusion I arrived at is that love is the solution.

My definition of love is significant because, in this context, love is not complete without the essential elements of acceptance, fairness, and doing one's best. My intention is to share this definition of love with you in an understandable and meaningful way, for future communications. I encourage you to read my book, Love Is the Solution, scheduled for release in Spring 2007. This definition of love offers you the solution to the smallest and largest challenges you encounter in life. By reading this book, you will begin the journey toward peace.

There is a practical plan, a proven, step-by-step approach to arriving at the solution. I have a vision for achieving it. It is a project establishing an international educational organization dedicated to stopping hatred, the source of conflict. No one person, politician or religion has the precise key to accomplishing this goal. We must research this complex issue to discover the most effective means by which to achieve a worldwide peace education program. We need a budget for research. Every government with a defense budget must establish a Peace Budget, allocating 1% of its defense funds to that peace budget, creating adequate funding for peace education dedicated to teaching principles of peace. Defense and wars come at a high cost, not only in human suffering and death, but in huge financial expenditures. Why support a plan to spend one penny of every dollar on building a peaceful planet through peace education? Because our project becomes an investment in a peaceful future, thereby reducing future defense budgets and deficits. I describe the step-by-step solution in my next book.

The most important subject in the world is peace. You may believe peace is an admirable but impossible goal. In my next book, you will find not only is it possible, but it's really a simple thing. I am going to show you why and how. We NEED to believe that peace is possible, to practice living with love, and to give this concept time to evoke change in our lives and in the world.
